6 steps to build plot and character together
Each step moves the story forward and deepens the character at the same time.
1
Flaw + Goal
Character: They start with a flaw or limitation.
Plot: They’re given a clear goal to pursue.
The flaw will make the goal harder—and more interesting.
2
Belief + Stakes
Character: They hold a belief about themselves or the world.
Plot: The stakes rise if they fail.
The higher the stakes, the more that belief gets tested.
3
Want vs Need + Obstacles
Character: They chase what they want, not what they need.
Plot: Obstacles force them to struggle for it.
Conflict exposes the gap between want and need.
4
Pressure + Midpoint Shift
Character: Relationships apply pressure and challenge them.
Plot: A major shift changes the direction of the story.
This is where things get serious—the cost becomes real.
5
Crisis + Breaking Point
Character: Their old way of thinking fails.
Plot: Everything falls apart.
This forces a decision: stay the same or change.
6
Change + Resolution
Character: They act differently—they’ve changed.
Plot: The final outcome plays out.
The ending works because the character earned it.
Use this when your story feels flat
If the plot is working but it feels hollow → strengthen the character side.
If the character is interesting but nothing happens → strengthen the plot side.
Great stories do both at once.
